What Is Thieves Oil And How To Make It

Thieves Oil dates back to the 1500's when it was used by certain individuals to protect them from the plague as they were going about their 'business".

Easy to make the blend at home and can be used around the home to clean and purify the atmosphere. Try a few drops in your burner or diffuser. You could even try it in a nebuliser if you have a respiratory infection.

There are many variations of the Thieves oil blend around, but in essence the recipe contains these essential oils:

  • Clove
  • Cinnamon Bark
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary
  • Lemon

The benefits of this simple blend have been passed down through the generations. Why that would be?

Individually, the essential oils are effective and powerful oils, but

when combined together they pack a  real punch!

Thieves Oil Kills Bacteria

Thieves oil contains potent antibacterial properties. Studies show that it has a 99.6 percent kill rate of airborne bacteria after only 10 minutes of exposure – and this includes powerful bacteria like Staph. (1) In addition, several of the oils in the blend  seem to inhibit respiratory tract infections, even some penicillin-resistant strains of pneumonia, highlighting just how powerful these oils can be. (2)

Thieves Oil Fights Harmful Fungi

Black mould, candida and other various fungus and yeast strains cannot stand against Thieves oil. It is cinnamon bark oil especially that has been shown to inhibit fungi and other respiratory tract strains when diffused and inhaled. (3)

Thieves Oil Improves Brain Health and Fights Cancer

Several of the oils in the Thieves mix prevent neural cell death and brain inflammation, as well as helping to kill cancer cells and slowing tumour growth. (4, 5) One study found that a compound in clove oil in particular is effective against many types of cancer cells, with researchers mentioning it could be the next novel treatment for cancer. (6)

Thieves Essential Oil Uses

Thieves oil can be used in various ways to support your health and wellbeing.

Topically
Antimicrobial properties make it excellent for use on skin. Make sure to dilute with a carrier oil by adding approximately 5 drops to 25ml of your chosen carrier oil. Make sure to test this blend on a patch of your skin before applying just incase.
Inhalation
Diffusing Thieves oil around your home allows easy inhalation helping to clear respiratory infection. Simply add a few drops to your diffuser.

 

Using Thieves Oil Around the Home

Thieves oil can be used as a natural disinfectant around your home. It’s great for wiping down counters, cleaning toys, disinfecting cutting boards, removing stale odours and freshening waste bins etc.

Try making a Thieves oil spray: Find a  small spray bottle and use at the ratio of approximately 5 drops per 25ml of water. Adding a small amount of witch hazel, will help the mix.

Recipe to make your own Thieves blend  

  • 25 drops clove essential oil
  • 22 drops lemon essential oil
  • 10 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
  • 9 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 200ml witch hazel or water (optional

Add essential oils to a small bottle and gently shake to combine.

Your powerful Thieves blend is now ready to use.
