Frankincense (Boswelia carteri)
Aroma: Frankincense is a woody, spicy fragrance, with a hint of lemon. It is often described as having a haunting aroma, perhaps partly referring to its historical significance during religious and spiritual ceremonies.
The plant: The frankincense tree is native to the Middle East, mainly China, Ethiopia, Iran and Lebanon.
The extraction: Frankincense essential oil is taken from the resin of the trees bark, so to access it incisions are made in the bark and the resin drips out in tears. This resin is then distilled to produce the essential oil.
Affects: Frankincense is a calming oil, useful for people with anxious and obsessional dispositions. The oil is also renowned for rejuvenating mature skin, reputedly smoothing out wrinkles and helping with the appearance of age spots and crows feet. The oil is slightly astringent which is also good for balancing oily skin. This astringent nature of frankincense is also good for clearing mucus in the lungs and therefore is particularly useful for enhancing lung function.
History: Frankincense oil has a long history of use, dating back to the time of the Egyptians and Hebrews. The oil was burnt at altars as an offering to the gods, and to fumigate the sick to banish evil spirits.
Interesting fact: During time of the Ancient Egyptians the oil was as valuable as gold.
Chemical constituents: Cadinene (Sesquiterpene), Camphene, Dipentene, Pinene, Phellandrene (Terpenes), Olibanol (Alcohol).
Blending: Frankincense oil blends well with lavender, sweet orange, geranium, patchouli, bergamot, lemon and myrrh.
