Healthy eyes in modern times

Modern flatscreens (PC, TV, tablet, smartphone etc) emit a light with a strong content of short wavelegth blue light. In nature blue light is always balanced by red light, but this is not the case with these screens. Scientific studies have shown that this light can damage the retina of the eyes. Are you familiar with burning, red eyes after working on the computer for a long time? Light with a high blue-light content greatly influences the hormonal balance and can lead to greater levels of stress on the body resulting not only in sleeping disorders (disruption of melatonin production and release) but a general disruption of natural circadian rhythms.

Watching screens in the evening without blue light protection increases stress on hormonal balance so that many of us cannot "switch off in the evening and at night, interfering with natural circadian "rest and repair" cycles ( also called autophagy and apoptosis) and hence regeneration is impaired. This can impact chronic health conditions.

These glasses protect your eyes by filtering out the dangerous unopposed blue light content.

Did you know?

All blue light protection is not the same These lenses are produced according to up-to-date filter and measurement technology developed by physician and light biologist Dr Alexander Wunsch They guarantee the highest scientific standards.

Which filter is the right one for you: PRO or LiTE?

This product: PRO filtering lenses:

The natural protective functions within the eye have been the model for our PRO filter: At the spot of most acute vision, the macula lutea (or yellow spot), the pigments lutein and zeaxanthin shield the retina cells from agressive short-wave radiation which causes cell damage through free radical formation.

Although this natural protection mostly filters out light in the violet and blue range ( >500 nm), filtering properties are observed even in the blue-green wavelengths up to 550 nm.

The bluelightprotect PRO filter optimally protects agains short-wave radiation (blue light), by filtering out 99% of light below 500nm, and in addition filtering out about 80% of the light in the blue-green range (500-550nm)

This is why we recommend the PRO filter glasses to people:

  • whose eyes are predisposed to or already show a medical condition
  • who spend long hours working on monitors or other screens - especially after dark
  • who spend long hours in an artificial light environment (eg from LED or flourescent lights) like a factory, office, hospital, school
  • especially those who do this in the evening or over night, when blue light is most disruptive to the circadian rhythm, eg shift workers
  • for sensitive people when you watch a film, TV or look at your phone after dark.
  • maximum blue light protection with 99% upto 500nm and 80% between 500nm-550nm( allowing for better colour rendition - see video on our page "Protect Your Circadian Rhythm")

Please note:

The stronger filter tint - PRO need a longer adjustment period for colour recognition than the lighter version

LiTE gives you better colour rendering with a shorter adjustment period than the PRO lense, and is suitable for less sensitive types or is recommended as a "beginners filter with blue light protection of about 95%.

Characteristics of the blue light protection PRO lenses are:

  • filter approx. 99% of light in the 380 -500nm range and 80% in the 500-550nm range
  • providing a reduction of reflections
  • contrast enhancing
  • reduces eye strain
  • relaxes the eyes
  • light and robust
  • 100% UV400 filter

Included in delivery:

1 pair of bluelightprotect FREiBURG glasses with PRO lenses - with anti reflective coating

1 hard case and microfiber cloth.

The development and optimisation of these glasses took place in collaboration with the renowned lighting expert Dr. med. Alexander Wunsch. This means you can be sure that you are receiving high-quality eye protection based on extensive specialist knowledge.

Healthy Eyes in Modern Times

The flat screen devices that we all use all of the time like our PCs, TVs, tablets and smartphones emit light with a strong content of short wavelength blue light. Compare the top image to the right with the image below of natural daylight. Scientific studies show that this altered light spectrum can damage the retina of the eyes.

The central image to the right shows the frequencies blocked by the LiTE lenses. These are designed for when there is a need for good colour rendering, for daytime use or for people who prefer to wear a lighter tinted lense. Observe that the 'blue' spike has gone, and also an amount of the green. The regenerative red is not altered.

The lower image shows the PRO lenses. These are the best choice for light-sensitive individuals and for night time use, especially where chronic conditions are apparent. Observe how the 'blue' spike has gone, and even more of the green is blocked. The regenerative red is not altered.

Have you experienced burning, red eyes after working on the computer for a long time?

Artificial lighting with a high blue-light content is very harsh. Imagine holding a bright torch and shining it in your face. Not something we would usually choose to do, but with all the screen devices we use that is exactly what we are doing. This artificial spectrum of light has been shown to greatly influence the hormonal balance which can lead to sleeping disorders with a disruption of melatonin production, as well as a range of other effects that are being discovered more and more as the research in this field progresses.. Watching TV or looking onto screens in the evening without protecting your eyes from the blue light increases stress on our body, disturbing hormonal balance particularly, so that many of us cannot "switch off when it is time to sleep. It is widely known that during sleep is when the 'rest and repair' cycles of natural circadian biology should occur. If sleep hormones are disrupted this repair may not happen at all, or the repair time could be reduced and regeneration is impaired.

PRiSMA blue blocking glasses protect your eyes by filtering out the most damaging blue light content.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ALL BLUE LIGHT BLOCKING GLASSES ARE NOT THE SAME?

PRiSMA lenses are produced according to the most up-to-date filter and measurement technology. Developed by physician and light biologist Dr. Alexander Wunsch, they guarantee highest scientific standards.

What is blue light?

Natural daylight is made up of a nearly continuous spectrum, without sharp spikes of certain light frequencies, in which all colours occur.

Spectral Measurement of Natural Daylight in Winter Under Cloudy Skies

All the different colours you can see correspond to different wavelengths of light, also called frequencies. This graph just shows the visible part of the spectrum of light. Ultraviolet and infrared are invisible to our eyes. At the left end of the visible spectrum are the short-wave frequencies made up of blue and violet light. UV light is even shorter wave and can not be perceived by the eye.The area with wavelengths up to approx. 500 nm (nanometers) is called blue light. It has been shown that even some of the green light can affect us, and PRiSMA glasses have a range of blocking effects up to 550nm.

This shortwave light has a strong oxidizing effect, and can cause cell damage through the formation of free oxygen radicals. It has long been known that UV light can damage the skin and eyes. That's why, for example, sunglasses are designed to be 100% UV-protected.However, protecting our eyes from blue light has been an underestimated parameter so far.

More and more studies are being published that show the potential danger of short-wave blue light light in the visible range. Not only do these wavelengths of light have a similar oxidative effect to UV light, they also penetrate the eye! Too much UV light primarily damages the eye lens, where it is mostly absorbed, and only a small portion is taken inside the eye. Blue light, however, hangs unimpeded on the retina and can cause lasting damage to the visual and pigment cells there.

Why is the topic so current?

Natural daylight from the sun provides a balance of light frequencies. It has been observed that the red parts balance out the blue. In natural daylight the harmful effect of the blue component is largely compensated by the regenerative effects of red and infrared radiation (light). We are increasingly surrounded by multiple light sources that not only radiate unnatural levels of blue frequencies, but also lack the regenerating red components.

This is particularly serious with computer and phone screens that we are very close to, but also with TVs, which are usually backlit with LED technology and into which we often look for hours.

Here you can see the spectrum of a standard flat screen.

Spectrum of a standard flat screen

In the blue area, a clear "peak" can be seen, an energy peak that never occurs in natural light ( refer back to the diagram above). In addition, this spectrum has little red content.

Light with a high proportion of short-wave blue frequency radiation can produce oxidative stress in the eye, which promotes long-term diseases such as myopia and macular degeneration. In addition, this short-wave light can also disturb the hormone balance, which is intrinsically linked to so many body functions and can promote the development of a host of chronic diseases.

It is very common for people to complain about short-term 'screen use' phenomena such as watery, burning and sore red eyes and headaches.

With our PRiSMA bluelightprotect range of glasses, we offer you an easy and safe way to protect yourself from aggressive blue levels in the light we are exposed to.

Use PRiSMA Blue Blocking glasses for viewing computers, TVs, phones etc and not forgetting anytime you are exposed to artificial light sources. Think not just about your home but also your work environment - schools, offices, hospitals, supermarkets, shopping centres...
